Gene-Paul Martin (b. 1989, Malina PH) burst onto the Philippine art scene with slick paintings of doe-eyed characters and a motley crew of monsters. Maturing as an artist, he has infused his pop-surrealist tendencies with more painterly preoccupations. His current works range from prismatic landscapes lit up by retina-searing streaks of hot pink to trippy dream-like shards of science fiction.

Apolitical in his approach, Martin says that his work is committed to neutrality: "Art is art - no politics, no religion," he says in the vernacular, "Nothing you do - or anything you do - is wrong because 'wrong' does not even exist as a word when it comes to art. It is the only neutral thing left in the universe."

Martin draws from a deep well of influences, with reference to David Hockney's brilliant and expressive use of color; Yves Tanguy's eccentric imagery; and Henri Rousseau's naivism. The common thread being the uncanny feeling of otherness. Of being alien. Trying to pin down a painting by Martin is like trying to pin down a barely remembered dream. Stripped of the pressure to 'mean' anything, his exuberant and energetic canvases offer us the opportunity to discover, for ourselves, the little details that may amuse, perhaps, or a sharp slice of rainbow color piercing through a jumble of shapes. To ask why they're there is an exercise in futility. Better to store bug-eyed and slip into a waking fantasy where nothing is wrong.
