Chiao-Han Chueh

Hamburg-based Taiwanese artist Chiao-Han Chueh (b. 1989, Taiwan) received her art education first in Taiwan and later moved to Hamburg for a career in contemporary art, her work reflects upon her experience of growing up in Taiwan as a local and living in the West as an Asian woman, contesting the normative gender constraints of women’s bodies and sexuality by portraying primarily nude female figures engaging in unbridled behavior within fantastical spaces. Her approach to oil painting is both influenced by Western academia and her experience of learning Chinese calligraphy and ink paintings at art school in Taiwan. Her works therefore shows a convergence of her personal experience and aesthetics from diverse artistic traditions.

In June 2023, Nunu Fine Art’s second show at its new NYC location will be a solo exhibition of Chiao-Han Chueh’s work, which mark’s the artist’s first presentation in the United States.  Chueh’s exhibition history includes solo exhibitions at Nunu Fine Art (Taipei, Taiwan) and XX space (Seoul, Korea); and group shows at Newwave Space (Reykjavík, Iceland), Kunstraum Kreuzberg (Berlin, Germany), and Ne’na Contemporary Art Space (Chiang Mai, Thailand). In 2019, Chueh was awarded the DAAD Stipendium in the Fields of Fine Art. She has participated in artist residencies including at Somos Art House A.I.R (Berlin, Germany), Ne’na Contemporary Art Space (Chiang Mai, Thailand), and Pier-2 Art Center (Kaohsiung, Taiwan).
