Nunu Fine Art is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in Taiwan by Mia Westerlund Roosen (b. 1942), a pivotal figure in Western contemporary art history. the exhibition Material Matters: Process and Interplay since the 1970s will officially open on October 17, 2026, at Nunu Fine Art Taipei.

During the 1970s, when Mia embarked on her artistic career, the art world was dominated by the Minimalist canon established by figures such as Donald Judd and Robert Morris. Yet Mia resisted reducing her work to dehumanized industrial fabrications. Instead, she transformed heavy metals and concrete into sculptures bearing skin-like folds and corporeal textures, reclaiming a visceral connection between art and the human body.

To understand her pivotal position in Western contemporary art history, one must look to her profound association with the legendary art dealer Leo Castelli. Castelli propelled titans such as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Richard Serra to the pinnacle of the global art stage, and Roosen was notably the first female artist to be represented and granted a solo exhibition by the gallery. In a 1982 photograph captured by Hans Namuth for the exhibition “Castelli and His Artists: 25 Years”, Roosen is the sole woman among the nineteen artists and the dealer gathered, standing alongside defining figures including Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Dan Flavin, and Joseph Kosuth. This historic image not only documents her central presence within the New York avant-garde of the 1970s and 1980s, but also cements her indelible place in American contemporary art history.

The exhibition at Nunu Fine Art Taipei focuses primarily on works from the late 1970s to the early 1980s, featuring concrete and lead sculptures imbued with an inner vitality, alongside drawings that exude profound material tension.
