THORDIS ADALSTEINSDOTTIR

Thordis Adalsteinsdottir was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, and divides her time between Reykjavik and Rennes, France. She received an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, after undergraduate study at the Icelandic Academy of Arts and the Universidad de Barcelona in Spain.
Adalsteinsdottir’s works are characterized by an absurdist, and, at times, uncanny approach that lulls viewers into a state of voyeuristic self-awareness. The humorous and often surreal nature of her ultra-flat compositions is evident through anthropomorphic animals and eccentric insertion of non-sensical objects that evoke a whimsical charm while belying a more sinister undertone. Adalsteinsdottir invites viewers to reflect on their roles within society, questioning the boundaries between individuals and prompting contemplation on the efficacy of societal structures and schemes.
Her international exhibitions include a solo at the Reykjavik Art Museum and a group show at the Knoxville Museum of Art in Tennessee. Nunu Fine Art Taipei has featured Adalsteinsdottir in numerous exhibitions, most recently the summer 2023 one-person show Conversations During a Heatwave, which featured new works on paper.
