Peter Zimmermann's Palladium acquired by The Metropolitan Museum of Manila

Palladium, 2022, epoxy on canvas

Nunu Fine Art is pleased to announce the donation of Palladium, a work by German artist Peter Zimmermann, to The M Museum in Manila, Philippines, where it will enter the museum's permanent collection.

Born in 1956 in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, and currently based in Cologne, Zimmermann began his artistic career in the 1980s. Using the covers and titles of atlases, art books, travel guides, and dictionaries as source material, he developed his signature "Book Cover Paintings," transforming these images into visually striking abstract works through the use of oil paint and epoxy resin. Through the layering of colors and the fluid qualities of his materials, Zimmermann creates large-scale works of deep luminosity and rich complexity, in which seamlessly blended gradients of color are rendered on aluminum composite panels to produce an effect that is almost liquid in appearance.

Palladium was exhibited at Nunu Fine Art Taipei in 2023, where it received widespread attention. As part of the two-city exhibition Painting Rules, co-organized by Nunu Fine Art and The M Museum in Manila, audiences were invited to experience the work firsthand and to reconsider the formal language and perceptual experience of contemporary painting at a time of rapid transformation in the production and consumption of images. The acquisition of Palladium marks a significant milestone in the artist's career and adds an important chapter to the growing landscape of contemporary art collections across Asia.

Peter Zimmermann's "Spiga" in the King Car Cultural & Educational Foundation’s Collection

German artist Peter Zimmermann has a rich and diverse body of work. His "Book Cover Paintings" series focuses on epoxy resin representations of book covers of atlases, art books, and more. By defining the relationship between text and image, Zimmermann interprets his views and explores the gap between our "perception" and "presentation" of objects.

Zimmermann's abstract paintings draw inspiration from collected photographs or documentary images. The work titled "Spiga" originates from a forest on the outskirts of Cologne, a place Zimmermann frequents. The roots of an ancient tree in this century-old forest inspired the creation of the painting.

Zimmermann’s mother is German, and his father was Italian. Following his father's early death, Zimmermann developed a deep connection with Italian culture and language. "La Spiga" refers to the Italian word for "wheat ear." His original intention derives from a parable from the Bible about appreciating blessings, echoing the cyclical growth of the ancient tree roots in the Colognian forest.

Renowned German contemporary artist Peter Zimmermann’s Travel Guides series is currently on view in the exhibition, Bibliomania: The Book in the Art, at Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders, Germany. The exhibition incorporates artworks of multiple forms and media such as painting, drawing, photography, film, installation, and artist’s book, exploring the importance of the paper-based medium of “book” in this age of digital media, as well as rethinking and recreating the role “book” plays in contemporary societies.

The Travel Guides series marks the beginning of Zimmermann’s use of epoxy. Graduated from art school and started creating conceptual art in the 1980s, Zimmermann imitates and enlarges book covers to challenge the interaction between one’s perceptions and feelings, including one’s experience of interpreting these paradoxical artworks. This series also became the first milestone in Peter Zimmermann’s career as a professional artist.

Peter Zimmermann built a full installation for the newly completed building at HZI Campus Braunschweig, Germany, a public research institution that belongs to the largest non-university scientific organization in Germany: Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres. Emitting light and glowing, colored three-dimensional structures of different sizes cluster together, float away and meander above the wall of the HZI as if they have settled here and are constantly multiplying. biological. These mysterious objects call to mind micro creatures that may refer to the observation of bacteria and viruses that the research center specializes in and demand viewers' consideration in the most inspiring way.

Nunu Fine Art cooperated with Leopold-Hoesch-Museum in Düren, Germany to produce our represented artist Peter Zimmermann’s latest catalog “Abtractness”.  In this catalog, we can see Peter Zimmermann started his art career by expressing how the images open up the access to the world but also limit our perception with his epoxy resin paintings of Michelin and Polyglott travel guides. Discovering on how the images form our relationship to art and how new representational possibilities shape our imagination, we may also get a glimpse on his reflection on the development of digital media and the associated multiplication in the early 1990s.

In order to create more opportunities for people getting the access to appreciate Peter Zimmermann’s works and to know the concept behind them, it is a delight for Nunu Fine Art to support Leopold-Hoesch-Museum producing this publication, which brings together Zimmermann ‘s early works and a selection of current productions.
