We are delighted to share that Caroline Monnet will be featured in Sovereign Stitches + Wild Weaves, opening November 26 at the McCord Stewart Museum in Montreal. Curated by Wanda Nanibush and Sage Paul, the exhibition brings together nearly 40 Indigenous artists from more than 30 Nations whose practices challenge the boundaries between contemporary art, culture, fashion, design, and customary practices. Organized around eight themes, the exhibition explores embodiment, adornment, storytelling, activism, conservation, and the central role of creation in sustaining kinship and building ancestral futures.
Monnet’s participation reflects her ongoing exploration of Indigenous identity, cultural continuity, and futurity. Rooted in her Anishinaabe and French ancestry, her multidisciplinary practice transforms industrial building materials through Indigenous approaches to making, bringing garment forms and inherited visual languages into dialogue with contemporary systems of construction. Through these unexpected combinations of material and form, Monnet considers how ancestral knowledge can be carried forward and reimagined for future generations.
